Fright Night Part 2

1989, Movie, R, 101 mins

Strictly for avid fans of the vampire subgenre, this gory, uninspired sequel to FRIGHT NIGHT offers neither the fascinating plot twists nor the startlingly horrific gimmicks employed so well by director Tom Holland in the original. FRIGHT NIGHT PART 2 picks up right where its 1987 predecessor left off, with the adventures of young Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale), who presumably killed the creature that struck terror into the hearts of all concerned in the original. While visiting Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), a self-proclaimed vampire killer and well-known host of a weekly horror film series, Brewster discovers that the vampire he disposed of had an equally hateful sister, Regine (Julie Carmen, THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR), who, along with several confederates, is determined to make Brewster suffer for what he did to her brother. One problem with FRIGHT NIGHT PART 2 is that the viewer never knows when the filmmakers are trying to scare the pants off fans of grisliness and when they're parodying such efforts. The direction by John Carpenter protege Tommy Lee Wallace (HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH), acting, script, editing, camerawork, and score are all predictable but adequate. The real stars are the special effects — the grisly melting flesh, and the convincing werewolf makeup. leave a comment
