Winninger plays an old German (who now lives in the US) sympathetic to the Nazi cause, and Ruggles plays his friend, also German, whose sympathies lie with the good ol' red, white and blue. The performers basically spend their time trapped on one set and argue their respective positions constantly. Winninger finally relents after he is duped into funding German sabotage operations that include the sinking of a transport that carried his own son. Badly done wartime propaganda based on a play written in 1918 and updated to apply to WW II. A remake, this was originally filmed in 1925, starring the famed comedy vaudevillians Joe Weber and Lew Fields. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Sound. leave a comment
