This postwar drama concerns a German nurse, Frieda (Mai Zetterling) who saves the life of RAF officer Robert Dawson (David Farrar) by helping him escape from a prison camp. To return the favor and get Frieda out of Germany, Robert marries her and brings her to his small hometown in England at the close of WW II. She is rejected by her husband's family and the townsfolk, whose view of Germans is understandably bitter and distrustful. To make things worse, her Nazi brother (Albert Lieven) arrives in town, spouting Fascist slogans and implicating Frieda. The film is surprisingly progressive in its understanding of postwar prejudice, considering it was made so soon after the war. leave a comment
