FRESH KILL
starstarstarstar
A little amateurish but vital and undeniably original, this low-budget satire marks the celluloid directing debut of video artist Shu Lea Chang (it's also the first screenplay by fashionably multicultural novelist Jessica Hagedorn). In a New York City hovering on the brink of ecological catastrophe, garbage hauler Shareen (Sarita Choudhury) and sushi waitress Claire (Erin McMurtry) struggle to raise a child while battling corporate power through imaginative acts of sabotage. It's a politically muddled but often bracing assault on late capitalist consumerism, and it's sexy enough to belie stereotypes about the prudery of P.C. culture. leave a comment
