FRENCH CONNECTION, THE
starstarstarstarstar
This tough, brilliant crime film features an Oscar-winning Gene Hackman as the indefatigable Popeye Doyle, a New York City cop with a thing for drug dealers. He goes up against a cartel of French heroin dealers when he tries to intercept a massive shipment of crank — 120 lbs. worth. Director William Friedkin produced a suspenseful and utterly absorbing film that incorporated thrills with street humor, routine police work and highly dramatic scenes. The justly famous car chase remains an incredible, hair-raising experience. Read the complete review for The French Connection

It was for that X-Files guest shot that Peter Boyle won his Emmy in 1996, but he won America’s heart (and was nominated seven times) as the most curmudgeonly of the comic engines in the splendid ensemble cast of Everybody Loves Raymond, one of the last great classic TV comedies. His cranky rapport with Doris Roberts, who played Marie to his Frank, was so popular they reprised their roles for several retro Alka-Seltzer commercials after Raymond folded. It was great seeing them again, reminding us of h... read more

Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Cool Hand Luke and The French Connection are among the 25 titles added this week to the National Film Registry, which was created by Congress in 1989 to preserve films of cultural, historical or artistic significance. I suspect Phoebe Cates in a bikini falls under "artistic." read more
