Richard Attenborough, the producer-director of GANDHI, returns with another film of profound political significance. CRY FREEDOM is the story of the friendship between Stephen Biko (Denzel Washington), leader of the Black Consciousness movement in South Africa in the 1970s, and Donald Woods (Kevin Kline), the white journalist who, with his wife (Penelope Wilton) and children, flees his homeland to publish a book telling the world of Biko's brutal murder at the hands of South African authorities in 1977. The first hour of the movie does provide a strong sense of the courage, intelligence, and humanity of Biko, but Attenborough's film is primarily about the radicalization of a white liberal. The film is talky and much of what is said is didactic, but it is never really preachy. Washington brings tremendous intelligence, dignity, and charisma to his Biko. Kline is also very good as the editor who goes from talking a good liberal game to living it, giving up virtually everything so that he can make the truth known about Biko. The film was shot in Zimbabwe. Oscar nominations from the Academy for Best Supporting Actor (Washington), Best Song (title song), and Best Original Score. leave a comment
