Hard-nosed, realistic view of college fraternity life circa 1954. Harrison plays a young pledge trying to get accepted into a fraternity run by understanding frat pledge master Fox and sadistic frat brother Newman. Morgan plays Harrison's girl friend who thinks the whole frat system is elitist and corrupt and begs him to abandon his desire to join before it is too late. Uncompromising in its brutal examination of the hazing and prejudice practiced in the fraternity system, the film is filled with excellent performances from a cast of newcomers (especially Newman, Paul Newman's son, who died tragically of a drug overdose soon after this film's release).
