The fifth film in the Hammer "Frankenstein" series, FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED! finds the good doctor (Cushing) interested in brain transplants. Anxious to work with an expert in the field, Cushing travels to visit his colleague Pravda, who has gone mad and been put in an asylum. By blackmailing young doctor Ward and his girl, Carlson (they have been selling drugs stolen from the hospital where Ward works), Cushing gets them to help him free Pravda. During the escape, Cushing inadvertently causes the death of Pravda. Undaunted, Cushing drags his friend's corpse to the basement of Carlson's rooming house, where he transplants Pravda's brain into the head of an unfortunate asylum employee (Jones). The operation is a success, but Jones' skull is horribly scarred. Shortly thereafter, a water main that runs through the boarding-house property bursts, uncovering Pravda's corpse. Cushing and Carlson barely manage to move the corpse before the authorities arrive to inspect the pipe. Jones, meanwhile, has wandered off to visit Pravda's wife. When confronted with this ugly man, who knows intimate details about her life with her husband, Audley becomes terrified and flees. Saddened by this turn of events, Jones seeks out Cushing to destroy him and his unholy work. Eventually creator and creation face each other and die together in a fiery climax. This well-done Hammer horror film features a thoughtful screenplay that finally injects some compassion and intelligence into the monster. One of director Fisher's best. leave a comment
