Above-average crime yarn involves unemployed mining engineer Ford, who is making a living as a truck driver and is suddenly seduced by Carter. Her plan is to inveigle Ford into taking an embezzling rap for her lover, Sullivan, a bank vice-president. Sullivan robs the bank, but she kills him for the loot, trying to encourage Ford to run away with her now that she truly loves him. She admits murdering Sullivan but tells Ford that she was drunk when she committed the foul deed. He's about to forgive her when he learns that his best friend, Buchanan, is charged with the killing. Ford tricks Carter into confessing to premeditated murder and saves his friend. This is a minor noir entry with some grit provided by Ford and a lot of sex ladled out by Carter. Sullivan, Buchanan, and 1930s leading lady turned character actress Morley give solid performances. Wallace's direction is rather uninspired despite his action-filled scenes. Opera-trained Carter once again (as in NIGHT EDITOR, 1946) demonstrates her bizarre speciality of portraying sadistic sexual excitement. Here, she conveys intense arousal when Sullivan's car goes over a cliff, showing a film noir talent, however repelling, that might have led her to stardom had she not been confined to B pictures for most of the decade she was in the movies. leave a comment
