A misfire for the brilliant O'Toole who--with his wife, Rampling, and servants, von Sydow and Luke--retreats to a desert isle to avoid the inconveniences of WW II. Here, he and Rampling languidly explore their past and verbalize over past glories of their civilized generation until the war
intrudes upon them and their servants revolt. The whole pretentious mess is an abortive attempt to remake THE RULES OF THE GAME; it fails miserably with a lifeless, wordy script and unrewarding direction and photography. Tunes include "Louise," "Isn't It Romantic," and the title song written by
Jay Livingston and Ray Evans.
