Director Mark Rydell's first feature film is an uneven adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's novella of lesbian love. Dennis and Heywood star as lovers who have segregated themselves from the world in a lonely farmhouse. Dennis is the dominant female in the relationship. There is a hint that the
older, uneasy Heywood harbors a longing for physical contact with a man. Dullea enters the scene and sparks the disintegration of the women's relationship. Good performance by Heywood. Nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score.
