An indictment of national socialism, FOUR SONS tells the tale of Czech brothers split in political loyalty with the rise of Nazi Germany. Ameche sides with his native country; Curtis becomes a traitorous diehard Nazi; Ernest dies in Poland for the Third Reich, winning an Iron Cross; Lowery emigrates to the U.S. to become an artist. Ameche and Curtis give solid performances as the opposing brothers, as does Leontovich in her first American role as the long-suffering mother who joins her one surviving offspring in America after the holocaust swallows up her family. Mayo's lively direction can't bolster the soggy melodrama inherent in the heavy-handed script. leave a comment
