A refreshingly gentle western starring McCrea as an honest rancher who is forced to rob a bank to save the family homestead, though he leaves the bank an IOU. Sheriff Bickford is sent to capture him. On the run, McCrea meets Dee and the pair fall in love, but he is forced to ride off to
avoid the ever-vigilant Bickford. As McCrea makes his way across the scorching desert, he discovers a Mexican family suffering from diphtheria. Unable to ignore the pleas of the father, McCrea stays and helps the family, only to be caught by Bickford. Bickford sees that his quarry is no normal
