When his artifact-collecting brother, Ray (Tom Poster), phones from Costa Rica in a panic, James Wheeler (Robert Patrick) immediately flies to his aid. Although Jack brings the ancient tray Ray urgently requested (centuries-old letters claim that, when conjoined with a similar relic, it reveals the location of a mythical city), it's too late; Ray's already dead. Determined to discover who murdered his brother, James encounters an Italian archaeologist, Caterina Carrera (Chiara Caselli), who coaxes him into joining an expedition financed by dying millionaire Andrew Fallon (Fred Ward). Although Carrera and Fallon are motivated by their scientific curiosity and adventurous natures, greedy banditos and corrupt bureaucrats hope to pillage the forgotten city and its fortune-filled temple. In particular, a government liaison named Gatto (John Verea) who joins the expedition seems awfully chummy with Fallon's nurse. James and Caterina continue their quest, despite the possibility that traitors within the party may kill them and traipse off with the fabled treasure. If you're in the mood for a stale jungle adventure inspired by 1930's serials, then this rickety expedition is just the ticket; aside from a snippet of contemporary lingo and a few visual cues, this retro-trek could have been filmed decades ago. As the intrepid adventurers scour the underbrush, you'll thrill to unsurprising plot twists and unsatisfying suspense. Relentlessly average, this odyssey lacks the basic star charisma and directorial panache that old-fashioned actioners took for granted. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
