FOREVER LULU | ALONG FOR THE RIDE
starstarstarstar
Melanie Griffith is the titular Lulu, a free-spirited schizophrenic who tracks down her first love, television writer Ben Clifton (unconvincingly portrayed by Patrick Swayze in a pair of prescription-free glasses), in this network attempt at a poignant mental health romantic drama. Despite the mild mannered uneasiness of Clifton's psychologist wife (Penelope Ann Miller), Lulu and Ben venture on a cross-country trip to find their son, Martin (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), whom Lulu had put up for adoption many years previous. They share a tenderness worthy of Sprite commercials (at one point, they dance the cha-cha while pumping gasoline!). During the journey, Ben rethinks his career, contemplates the son he never knew he had, and falls in love once more with Lulu. But Lulu is an escaped mental patient. At one moment she is content to relax in the convertible, smoking cigarettes with her feet on the dashboard, hair extensions flying in the wind. But she is prone to temper tantrums and suicide attempts. Perhaps incapable of a healthy relationship with Ben, by the end of the film Lulu finds her ray of light. She meets her son, rekindles a spark with her soul mate and, in the final scene, paints a rainbow on a wall. In her coveralls and paint-smeared facelift, Melanie Griffith reminds us just how painful movie watching can be. leave a comment --Julie Ann Klausner
