1988, Movie, NR, 102 mins

Arestrup, an Austrian diplomat in Paris, awakes one morning, after a strange dream about murder, to find himself suddenly and completely detached from his whole world. As he tries to deal with his odd empty feelings, he goes through the motions of his daily life, engaging in steadily more bizarre and illogical behavior. Based on Peter Handke's novel Moment of True Feeling, FOREIGN CITY tries and fails to operate at the same intellectual level as the book. In attempting to communicate this existential dissociation, it is necessary for the actor to be very, very good, or for the director to convey his point to the audience through visual means. Director Didier Goldschmidt simply lets Arestrup move through his banal day and merely accomplishes the easy feat of proving that is indeed banal. Arestrup does little to help matters, looking more petulant than alienated. leave a comment
