Veteran British director Neame takes a playful look at the odyssey of an Indian who loses his job in Calcutta and, in remarkably short order, finds himself acting as a physician for the British prime minister. After being fired from his job as a desk clerk in a fleabag hotel, Banerjee steals from his father the funds to emigrate to England. Once in London, he gets a job working as a conductor on a double-decker bus. Almost before he knows it, he finds himself administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to the victim of a bus accident, who is so indebted to this fine Indian "doctor" that she offers to recommend him to her many friends. Based on a novel by Mann, FOREIGN BODY has some amusing moments, but the film is as much of a roller-coaster ride as is the principal chara character's life. Banerjee turns in a fine performance, and the supporting cast is a distinguished one, but they cannot overcome an unimaginative story line that refuses to catch fire. leave a comment
