FORCE OF EVIL

This dark and brooding film noir features one of John Garfield's greatest performances, and was the only film to be directed by the gifted Abraham Polonsky before he was blacklisted by the HUAC. Garfield plays a cynical, hard-as-nails lawyer who works as a retainer for rackets czar Roy Roberts. Roberts plans to take over the New York City numbers game by bankrupting the smaller operations -- including the one run by Garfield's own brother (Thomas Gomez).
