Stanwyck is the staid librarian who falls in love with district attorney Menjou, who conducts an affair with her although he is married to crippled Peterson. Stanwyck has a daughter by him and the child is adopted by Menjou, while Stanwyck gets a job working for muckraking journalist Bellamy, who is continually looking for someone to ruin. Meanwhile, Menjou works his way up the political ladder to governor. Stanwyck marries Bellamy, but when he learns of her past and threatens to publish it, Stanwyck shoots him. Capra himself described the story as "two hours of soggy, 99.44 percent soap opera." The only redeeming features of this weepy, implausible melodrama are the professional performances by Menjou and Stanwyck and some very good photography by Walker. Stanwyck was the second choice to play the lead in this film. It had been turned down by Helen Hayes after she had been successful in a very similar part in THE SIN OF MADELON CLAUDET. leave a comment
