Stanwyck is the staid librarian who falls in love with district attorney Menjou, who conducts an affair with her although he is married to crippled Peterson. Stanwyck has a daughter by him and the child is adopted by Menjou, while Stanwyck gets a job working for muckraking journalist Bellamy, who is continually looking for someone to ruin. Meanwhile, Menjou works his way up the political ladder to governor. Stanwyck marries Bellamy, but when he learns of her past and threatens to publish it, Stanwyck shoots him.
