Stanwyck is the staid librarian who falls in love with district attorney Menjou, who conducts an affair with her although he is married to crippled Peterson. Stanwyck has a daughter by him and the child is adopted by Menjou, while Stanwyck gets a job working for muckraking journalist Bellamy, who is continually looking for someone to ruin.
