Fernandel as a doctor married to Nollier rebels against her and his mother (Sylvie), engaging in an affair with young Arnoul. The rare noncomedic performance by Fernandel is quite good, and the whole film is steadfastly adult and serious. The most effective scenes are those lifted directly
out of Simenon's excellent novel. (In French; English subtitles.)
