It may have been designed as a vehicle for Friends star Matthew Perry, but costar Salma Hayek steals the awkwardly formulaic, cliche-ridden show right out from under him. This gimmicky romantic comedy, in which unwanted pregnancy following a one-night stand leads to sundry wacky complications, is shallow and unconvincing. Sleek, WASP, corporate-tool Alex Whitman (Perry) meets beautiful photographer Isabel Fuentes (Hayek) at a restaurant and one thing leads to another. Faster than you can say vaya con Dios, Alex is doing highly uncharacteristic things: getting married in a tacky Vegas chapel, slacking off at work and enjoying quality time with his new exotic Mexican familia. The multicultural-opposites-attract formula is handled with sledgehammer subtlety, and though Perry's mugging provides the occasional giggle, his screen presence is nearly as weak as his chin. The comedic reaction shot is Perry's forte, but he fires off so many reactions in such rapid succession that you can't help but notice that his idea of acting involves opening his mouth and forgetting to close it. Fortunately, Hayek is a goddess -- what we can't figure out is why such a stunner is wasting her time with this pasty, chinless dork. leave a comment
