Director Robert Altman adds yet another stage play adaptation to his filmography, and the results are less than compelling. FOOL FOR LOVE examines the turbulent romance between a wandering cowboy, Sam Shepard, and his one true love, Kim Basinger, who works and lives in a seedy motel in the New Mexico desert. One day Shepard arrives in his pickup truck and reenters Basinger's life after a long absence. What ensues is an angst-filled I-love-you-I-hate-you session that sees the arrival of Basinger's new suitor, Randy Quaid, and a mysterious, vengeful, gun-wielding countess, Deborah McNaughton, with whom Shephard has had an affair. The truth about the nature of their relationship is revealed through a series of awkward flashbacks. FOOL FOR LOVE is a great play, and the performances from the cast are solid--especially Stanton's and Shepard's--but as a film the whole thing seems rather contrived and stiff. Movies have to move and FOOL FOR LOVE doesn't. The unusual manner in which the flashbacks are presented is intriguing (where the voice-over and the action don't match), but the flashback is generally an awkward narrative device, and the ones here are no exception. leave a comment
