The Fog

1980, Movie, NR, 91 mins

A ghost ship occupied by 100-year-old corpses terrorizes a coastal community that is covered in a heavy fog. Although it opens promisingly enough--with a precredits sequence in which John Houseman, playing a grizzled old sailor, tells the ghost story to a group of children gathered around a campfire--THE FOG must be considered a disappointment. While some have simply argued that a rolling fog bank just isn't scary (tell that to Val Lewton), the film's real problem is Carpenter's diffuse narrative, which introduces far too many characters--forcing the director consistently to cut away to each story strand, thus destroying much of the suspense. What does work, however, is Carpenter's unmatched visual style and the marvelous photography of Dean Cundey. As he does in most of his films, Carpenter has inserted several in-jokes, including casting himself as a church janitor and naming one of the characters after his one-time collaborator Dan O'Bannon (DARK STAR). leave a comment
