Tight, grim little drama directed by Monte Hellman, written by and starring Jack Nicholson. Martin plays a world adventurer who meets up with evil American Nicholson in Southeast Asia. Nicholson, in search of a cache of valuable diamonds (unbeknown to Martin), murders a young woman, and soon the two are on a passenger plane en route to the Philippines with Nicholson still searching for the diamonds. The plane crash-lands in the jungle, and the man carrying the diamonds, Hackett, is seriously wounded. Before he dies, Hackett passes the diamonds to Martin, who is unaware that they really belong to Diaz, another passenger. Diaz grabs the gems at gunpoint, but the survivors are beseiged by natives who imprison them. The group escapes and Nicholson kills Diaz for the diamonds, then flees into the underbrush. Martin pursues and wounds him with a gunshot. Dying, Nicholson throws the diamonds into a river and then shoots himself before he can be recaptured, leaving Martin alone to face the wrath of the natives. This collaborative effort was filmed simultaneously in Tagalog for its local release, these scenes being directed by Eddie Romero. A prior collaboration of Nicholson and Hellman, shot in the same Philippine locations and with some of the same players, was BACK DOOR TO HELL (1964). leave a comment
