There have been many movies made about wrestling since this effort by John Ford, but few come close to the feeling generated by the actors here, particularly Wallace Beery, playing a sweet-natured German grappler who is taken advantage of by a pair of ex-convicts. Sexy Lora (Karen Morley) persuades Polikai (Beery) to secure the prison release of her lover, Nicky (Ricardo Cortez), who she claims is her brother. When Lora becomes pregnant, Nicky disappears, and Polikai and Lora are married and emigrate to the US, where Polikai, already the German champion, becomes the world title holder. In short order, Nicky reappears, becomes Polikai's manager, and tries to get him to throw matches. However, when Nicky makes the mistake of striking Lora, Polikai kills him and is incarcerated. The three leads are excellent in demanding roles: playing a different kind of CHAMP, Beery is totally believable, German accent and all; Morley makes us like her despite her duplicity; and Cortez lends just the right amount of charm to his despicable cad. leave a comment
