The Flesh Eaters

1964, Movie, NR, 92 mins

An alcoholic film queen (Rita Morley) and her secretary (Barbara Wilkin) charter a private plane piloted by Grant Murdock (Byron Sanders). Forced to crash-land on an island--actually suburban New York--the trio discover that the place is inhabited by a mad scientist (Martin Kosleck) working with tiny sea creatures that devour human flesh. Filmed in 1961, this is a pretty entertaining low-budget affair that makes up for its lack of budget through sheer dedication and imagination. The filmmakers were no novices, having come from the "nudie" film industry (editor Radley Metzger would go on to direct and produce such "art" porn classics as THE LICKERISH QUARTET and THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN). Since most of the special-effects money went to making up the victims, the sea creatures were created by scratching the film stock with pins. A real oddity. leave a comment
