Dan Collier (Sterling Hayden) is the hard-as-nails commanding officer of a carrier air group aboard the aircraft carrier USS Princeton. It is 1944, and the Princeton is traveling through the explosive Pacific. In addition to the Japanese Zeros attacking from above, Collier must battle Joe Rodgers (Richard Carlson), the commander of a new air group on the carrier. Rodgers is a friendly commander who never pushes his men too far, a philosophy directly at odds with Collier's rough edge. Collier runs a tight group because he wants to keep his men alive; the men don't like it, but by the war's end they realize he was right. An entertaining picture, FLAT TOP has plenty of actual combat scenes intercut with the fiction, and many of the carrier's real personnel appear in the film.
