The kind of film they don't make anymore, and with good reason. Philip Bosco is a New York cab driver who dreams of being a Shakespearean actor, an ambition drilled into him by his father, William Hickey, seen in flashbacks. His ex-wife, Olympia Dukakis, is a habitual gambler raising their son to be the same. His current girl friend, Linda Thorson, is stepping out on him with her art teacher. A passenger in his cab makes a homosexual pass at him, and after angrily rejecting it he learns the man is the producer of the Shakespeare festival for which he had intended to audition. In a fit of desperation over his rapidly collapsing dream, he sits in an outdoor theater in the dead of winter and tears the pages from his volume of the Bard's works. The crew of New York stage stalwarts give good performances, but the whole thing is so unfocused as to make it all seem pointless. leave a comment
