Bates is a Jew in turn-of-the-century czarist Russia. Anti-Semitism is rampant, and Bates is accused of killing a young boy. Never formally charged, he is put through physical and mental torture to confess his crime. Bates refuses, and his case becomes news worldwide. Bogarde is the
government lawyer trying to help Bates out of his plight. Frankenheimer's direction is strong in this unrelentingly brutal film. Bates was nominated for Best Actor Oscar, but lost to Cliff Robertson in CHARLY.
