Two doctors, seven nurses, and a nun are abducted by guerillas in Vietnam during the French involvement in the 1950s. They're taken captive to use their skills to save a dying war-lord. The women are also given to the soldiers for sexual pleasure. The combined efforts of the group are unable to save the war-lord, and when the guerillas are away on a raid, the doctors and nurses make an escape attempt. Both doctors and several of the nurses are killed, as are most of their guards. Clavell brings a sensitivity to a film that in other hands might have become just another war melodrama (Clavell spent five years as a prisoner of war in the Pacific during WW II). Asian customs and thinking are portrayed insightfully, and Clavell also suggests that women are stronger and more organized than men. leave a comment
