This action flick about a high-tech felon turned high-rise hero combines the conventions of disaster films and crime thrillers with surprisingly mild results. Cat burglar Max Hooper (Dean Cain), who's been hired to pilfer Tri-Tech's new super conductor, crawls like human fly through the air ducts of company's skyscraper headquarters. But corporate insiders are also betraying Tri-Tech at the behest of outsiders with deep pockets; while one employee photocopies secret documents, another prepares to nab the VRC (virtual reality chip) that Max has been paid to steal. What Max doesn't realize is that his powerful client is the CIA; once Max forks over the chip, the organization will escape detection by pinning the crime on him. Tri-Tech CEO Jack Calloway (Jim Storm) summons his staff for a surprise meeting about industrial espionage. Who among them is a spy? Could it be Dr. Philip Chow, (Benjamin Lum), the co-inventor of the super-conductor; Cordelia Calloway (Mel Harris), Jack's divorce-bound wife; or Roger (Harry Van Gorkum), one of several nervous executives? Meanwhile, Max faces hotter issues than government chicanery when a fire rips through the skyscraper. Instead of saving his own skin, Max joins forces with security chief Paul Brody (Richard Tyson) to rescue Calloway's band of white-collar cutthroats. As the trapped suspects argue about exit routes, Cordelia's lawyer makes the mistake of taking the elevator; he's the first of many casualties. Before Max can lead a handful of survivors to the roof, Tri-Tech's traitors show their true colors. Who will survive, and who will claim Calloway's coveted chip without getting burnt to a crisp? Catastrophe fans may get a buzz from this film, which fries enough extras to satisfy disaster flick groupies. If only the selfless hero weren't forced to aid so many undeserving corporate sharks! leave a comment --Robert Pardi
