FIRESTORM

Smokey the Bear would be proud: This picture's climactic firestorm should send viewers from theaters muttering "I will prevent forest fires, I will prevent forest fires, I will prevent forest fires." Jesse Graves (former football star and current Fox NFL Sunday host Howie Long) is a "smokejumper," one of an elite cadre of daredevil firefighters who parachute into burning forests. The plot cooked up -- if you'll excuse the expression -- by first-time screenwriter Chris Soth involves a prison break lead by vicious sociopath Earl Shaye (William Forstythe), who's perfectly willing to burn down the whole Pacific Northwest if it will cover his tracks: Think BACKDRAFT crossed with CON AIR. Along the way, Shaye and his fellow jailbirds kidnap a feisty ornithologist (Suzy Amis), who has the misfortune to be working in their neck of the woods when the fire breaks out. First-time director Dean Semler -- an Academy Award-winning cinematographer -- keeps things moving at a smart clip, and Long exudes an effortless affability, but in the end this formulaic action picture can't transcend its by-the-numbers feel. Forsythe lends his particular brand of stylized malice to the proceedings, having a fine old time being as psychotically evil as he can possibly be; his inevitable spectacular bad end is, however, shockingly sadistic -- no matter how richly deserved. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
