1932, Movie, NR, 67 mins

starstarstarstar
The first of three 1930s baseball comedies starring Joe E. Brown (see ELMER THE GREAT, 1933, and ALIBI IKE, 1935), FIREMAN, SAVE MY CHILD cast the former semipro player as Joe Grant, a firefighter in a small Kansas town who is also a diamond sensation. He pitches so well, in fact, that he lands a spot on the St. Louis Cardinals' roster, bringing with it the added distraction of team follower June (Lillian Bond), who threatens his romance with Jawhawk sweetheart Sally (Evalyn Knapp). Joe's main motivation, however, is to make enough money to complete work on an experimental fire extinguisher he hopes to patent, and he takes his field responsibilities with less than the utmost seriousness. By the frenetic comic climax, however, he manages to squelch the Cards' World Series opponents as well as a raging office fire. leave a comment
