Physically spare but deeply sentimental, this period romance doesn't waste much time beating around the bush. Elisabeth (Sophie Marceau) is a Swiss governess whose father is financial straits. An unidentified gentleman agrees to pay off his debts, if she'll meet him at a lonely seaside inn, have sex with him over the course of three nights, and then give up the child she bears. The two begin their dutiful intercourse and discover that they like it, but bear duty in mind and part as the strangers they are. At the appointed hour Elisabeth delivers over her infant girl, but years pass and she bitterly regrets not knowing her daughter, marking the passage of time with entries into a visual scrapbook. Elisabeth tracks down the girl and gets herself hired as her governess; young Louisa (Dominique Belcourtis) proves a stubborn, spoiled brat who goes through caretakers faster than tooth brushes, but Elisabeth wins her over. She also learns why Charles (Stephen Dillane) had to go outside his marriage to conceive an heir: His wife Amelia has been in a coma for almost 10 years. Gothic complications ensue, but the unconventional gentleman and surrogate mother before her time are inexorably drawn to one another. Writer-turned-director William Nicholson (SHADOWLANDS, NELL) doesn't stray far from genre conventions, and wraps matters up with a happy ending that's simultaneously too pat and too grim to truly satisfy the die-hard romance-novel fans who are this film's natural audience. leave a comment --Sandra Contreras
