Frankie Avalon and Fabian play stock car drivers who spend their time away from the track competing for the affections of Annette Funicello. Bootleggers trick Dave (Avalon) into carrying their contraband during a cross-country race, but he gets wise and helps the Feds nail the culprits.
Director William Asher, responsible for such films as MUSCLE BEACH PARTY (1964) and BEACH BLANKET BINGO (1965), offers up above-average teen-age fare with FIREBALL 500. Not surprisingly, the stars are able to find time to sing between car crashes and checkered flags.
