FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN

The facts and nothing but. George and Beth Gage's salute to the fighting men of the 10th Mountain Division is a throwback to the kind of no-nonsense educational film we used to get to watch when teacher was out sick. Activated in 1941 as a precaution against foreign invasion, the elite 10th was the only U.S. infantry division ever trained specifically for mountain warfare, and its recruits included top-notch skiers, mountaineers and rock-climbers from all over the US and Europe. The Gages' film documents the soldiers' arduous training -- mostly through pristine, color archival footage -- then chronicles the troops' daring invasion of the German-occupied Italian Alps. The subject is certainly worth documenting and, rah-rah voice-over narration notwithstanding, the film's first half is rather interesting. But too much of the latter portion is devoted to the postwar careers of a handful of infantrymen, who found success in ski resorts, sporting goods and environmental pursuits. Mention of one of the 10th's more notable veterans, 1996 presidential candidate Bob Dole, is conspicuously absent. leave a comment
