While on a scientific expedition to an uncharted island in the South Seas, professor Souplex, his daughter, Dupuis, and his assistant, Crisa, find themselves shipwrecked and alone. Ten years later, after Souplex dies, Dupuis and Crisa decide to "marry." Fearing he may lose Dupuis if they are returned to civilization, Crisa fails to light a signal fire when he spots a ship on the horizon. Nevertheless, the ship, which carries a crew of international smugglers, docks on the island. When the smugglers discover Crisa and Dupuis, they decide to kill Crisa and take Dupuis with them.
