After being forced to retire from the Chicago Bears, defensive tackle Jim Finney (Robert Kilcullen) turns down a coaching job to pursue a career as an artist; however, his football-themed paintings are not accepted by the art world, and he ends up throwing his canvases into the Chicago River. His wife, a rising singer, leaves him, and, feeling depressed and rejected, with no one to turn to, he writes her a letter, receiving a publicity photo as his only reply. Much of the film consists of color football flashback sequences, with occasional returns to the black-and-white present where Finney tends bar. This well-photographed and -directed, but ultimately depressing, independent effort was producer-director-writer Bill Hare's first feature film. leave a comment
