An ambitious and, all-in-all, successful independent undertaking, the filmmakers drew on the important resources available, such as the James Joyce Society, to ensure as authentic a rendition possible of Joyce's witty, much-studied philosophical fantasy. Melding animation and stock footage with live action and location shots, the film recounts the history of humanity in Joyce's vision, through the medium of Dublin publican Kelly's vision of his own death. The coffined Kelly participates in the ceremony, casting himself in many mental roles as his wife Reilly and two sons, Haskell and Johnson, enact the appropriate supporting figures, along with the other riotous mourners. At cock's crow, Kelly awakens from his dream of his demise with enhanced self-awareness. leave a comment
