Michael Hoffman's manic romantic comedy serves up two charismatic leads (Michele Pfeiffer and George Clooney), a classic cute premise -- mutual loathing-at-first-sight turns to romance for a pair of single parents over the course of a single, impossibly hectic day -- and tosses in a whirlwind tour of New York City. What's not to like? Plenty, in a film that takes such sadistic delight in the thorough humiliation of its heroine. After their youngsters both miss their scheduled field trip, control-freak architect Melanie (Pfeiffer) and slouchy, irresponsible muckraker Jack (Clooney) find themselves thrown together, trying to juggle kids and careers on what turns out to be one of the most important days of their lives. It's a Murphy's Law comedy: Everything that could possibly go wrong, does. Unfortunately, it mostly happens to Melanie, who falls apart as she falls down, is repeatedly splattered with food, loses one of the kids and falls in love with a guy who makes her grovel and then -- patriarchal conquest complete -- falls asleep on her. Jack, meanwhile, gets to depose a corrupt mayor, cuddle with kittens and prove, time and again, he makes a far better mother than the hapless female could ever hope to be. leave a comment
