An often-fascinating look at the early days of film production in Japan that is, unfortunately, hampered by some cliche plotting and a very diffuse narrative. Set in 1933, the film stars Arimori as a beautiful and naive young girl who sells candy at the local movie theater. Spotted by
Kishibe, a famous film director patterned after the great Yasujiro Ozu, Arimori is offered a chance to become a movie actress. Stuck playing bit parts, Arimori becomes frustrated at her lack of acting ability and downright embarrassed when uttering a single line requires more than a dozen takes.
Although disappointed, Kishibe has faith in the girl and allows her to get more experience...
