Jude Law's charisma is evident, even in this early artifact from undistinguished past. Having stayed in touch since film school, several friends get together for a somber occasion: the funeral of independent movie-maker Jude (Jude Law). Acting on her husband's last wishes, Jude's widow, Sadie (Law's then-wife, Sadie Frost) commissions a videotape of the wake. Jude's pals all knew he was shhoting them for his ongoing cinema-verite project, but they had no idea that he had secretly installed a video camera in the bathroom and bedroom of his house. The mourners set aside their toasts to watch a rough cut of Jude's nasty footage, and because Sadie was careful to obtained release forms, they're powerless to censor such scenes as a gay couple squabbling; Sadie's sister, Holly (Holly Davidson), stealing a purse; and Dominic (Dominic Anciano) and Mark (Mark Burdis) snorting coke. Jude's hot-tempered friend Ray (Ray Winstone) is particularly vociferous, but he and his wife, Lisa (Lisa March), remain rooted to their seats: Jude has gone beyond shooting real life to manipulating situations. With Sadie's complicity, he preyed on Ray's doubts about Lisa's fidelity. It eventually becomes clear that one of the assembled mourners had a motive for killing Jude. Holly was planning to blackmail Jude with a stolen videotape and one shot shows Jude having sex with a mystery woman who could be either Lisa or Holly. Sadie has her sites set on bigger game than humiliating Jude's friends: She orchestrated this post-mortem homage as a means of catching Jude’s killer. Will someone crack and implicate him- or herself as the camera keeps recording? Co-writers and directors Anciano and Burdis concocted a semi-improvised hipster thriller that never manages to generate any real suspense; the cast's acting styles run the gamut, and in the end the project offers pretension instead of insight. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
