A disappointing big-budget western which claimed to be based on Zane Grey's 1929 novel, but resembles the 1923 silent western, THE COVERED WAGON. One of Cooper's early films, he plays the protege of Torrence and Marshall, a couple of wagon train scouts. Prior to leaving Missouri with a cross-country train, Cooper is tossed in jail on a disturbing the peace charge. A French girl, Damita, who is crossing the country alone, joins the caravan and is persuaded by Torrence and Marshall to pose as Cooper's wife so the sheriff will release him. Meanwhile, a member of the train, Kohler, plots an Indian attack. Cooper and Damita strike up a romance, which Torrence and Marshall immediately attempt to break up so they won't lose Cooper to marriage. While the caravan is crossing a river, the Indians attack. The raid takes the lives of both Torrence and Marshall, as well as the evil Kohler. Cooper throws kerosene on the river and sets it ablaze to ward off the attackers. Their journey continues, with only Cooper left to carry on. This production was so big it had two directors, two cinematographers, and nine musical score composers. There was so much unused footage left over from the film that it was used for background in the 1934 Randolph Scott film, WAGON WHEELS. leave a comment
