FIESTA offered leading roles for the first time to Montalban and Charisse. This musical, about a pair of twins, was shot on location in Mexico. A retired matador, Bonanova, and his wife, Astor, are the parents of Montalban. Bonanova wants Montalban to become a matador. Montalban is more interested in music and wants to be a composer. Williams has also developed matador skills and disguises herself as her twin brother. She goes into the ring so that she can save the family from disgrace, and so her brother will not be thought of as a coward. She is discovered, and the shocked Bonanova finally allows Montalban to study music. Charisse is the love interest for Montalban, and the two sing and dance together. There are several colorful musical sequences, including Aaron Copland's "El Salon Mexico," retitled "Fantasia Mexican," which doubles as the wonderful piece supposedly composed by Montalban. Other songs: "La Bamba" (Luis Martinez Serrano), "La Luna Enamorada" (Angel Ortiz de Villajos), "Miriano" (Bolanos Recio, Leocadio Martinez Durango), "Romeria Vasca" (Los Bocheros). leave a comment
