In this lame farce, a corporate takeover sparks a comedy of errors driven by the clash between brazen Yanks and uptight Brits. The predatory Octopus Corporation, headed up by vulgar, rapacious New Zealand billionaire Rod McCain (Kevin Kline), buys a small English zoo. Can-do executive gal Willa Weston (Jamie Lee Curtis) volunteers to make it profitable, and McCain's lecherous, conniving ninny of a son, Vince (Kline again) joins the new management team with an eye to getting into Willa's pants. It's not exactly A Fish Called Wanda: It just reunites the cast -- John Cleese, Michael Palin, Curtis and Kline -- and puts them through very similar paces, to considerably less comic effect. The notoriously troubled production was extensively reworked after disastrous previews (hence the second director, the famously funny Fred Schepisi), but laughs are still few and far between. The funniest scenes come early, as zookeepers -- who are warned that only fierce, crowd-drawing creatures will be allowed to stay in the zoo -- misrepresent a variety of adorable, mild-mannered mammals as beasts of unparalleled savagery. But things quickly degenerate into a series of juvenile jokes about flatulence and bosoms, and by the end the cast is reduced to frantically manhandling a corpse for yucks.
