MY FELLOW AMERICANS

Yes, it's a deeply formulaic buddy movie predicated on geezer charm. But the surprise of this comedy about two former Chief Executives forced to get along and get in touch with the real America is how sharply written it is -- almost sharply enough to overcome the crude direction that grotesquely overemphasizes the picture's inevitable sentimental interludes. Democratic fanny-pincher Matt Douglas (James Garner) and Republican penny-pincher Russell Kramer (Jack Lemmon) have spent their long political careers loathing one another. Now they're both out of office and pining for the glory days. In between attending state funerals, Douglas is quietly writing his memoirs while Kramer crisscrosses the country giving lectures, dressing up corporate shindigs and hawking his presidential cookbook. When a long-buried scandal threatens the administration of weasely President Haney (Dan Aykroyd), he decides to pass the buck to the exes: Next thing they know they're running -- carefully -- for their lives. Garner and Lemmon snipe at one another like the old pros they are, and it's hard not to like a movie in which two proper old politicos are rescued from NSA hit men by Dykes on Bikes. leave a comment
