FEELING MINNESOTA
starstarstarstar
Cameron Diaz and Keanu Reeves play star-crossed lovers in yet another sorry attempt at reproducing the Quentin Tarantino recipe for way-cool movies. Diaz plays Freddie, the reluctant bride who's being forced to marry Sam (Vincent D'Onofrio) as payback for money she's accused of stealing. Sam's brother Jjaks (Reeves) makes an unexpected appearance at the wedding, and the usual mayhem ensues. Within moments, Jjaks and Freddie are making love in the bathroom, and within hours they're -- yes -- a couple on the run. The rest is a meandering mess of violence and aging stars who've seen much better days (Tuesday Weld and Dan Ackroyd, in particular), all buoyed up by an in-your-face soundtrack that never lets up. Diaz is clearly an actress of some talent but Reeves is nothing without a firm hand, and first-time director Steven Baigelman hasn't got one. The title, by the way, is cribbed from one of Soundgarden's more lamebrained efforts ("Outshined"), though we have the awful feeling that most everyone involved thought it was pretty deep. leave a comment
