An interesting comedy, independently made in Chicago, that marked Phil Kaufman's first solo effort as director. He'd previously codirected the offbeat GOLDSTEIN, another independently produced Chicago effort. Utilizing the talents of several Second City comic actors, it's the story of Voight, a rube, who comes to Chicago, gets shot by some mobsters, and awakens to find that he has the powers of Superman. Sexy Van Vooren spoofs the bombshells of gangster movies, and Darden is the first of the many mad scientists on his resume. Joan Darling, who has since become a successful TV director, is cute but doesn't get much of a chance to stretch herself. Author Nelson Algren (THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM (1955), among others) does well as Needles. Ben Carruthers, who got his start understudying Lou Gossett in Broadway's "Take A Giant Step" in the 1950s, is excellent as The Cat. David Steinberg proves he has no talent as The Rat. Technical credits are not as good as the intentions. With some more money, this could have been a big winner in 1967. leave a comment
