A clever little thriller in which Cookson, a medical student running out of money, pawns his last few possessions with Pierlot, one of his professors, a mean-minded, avaricious individual, to pay his tuition. When he learns that his small scholarship has been cut off, Cookson comes to believe that Pierlot is behind it all and kills the professor. Cookson is sloppy in his work and forgets to retrieve his money, leaving clues behind for police. A short time later, he meets Gwynne and falls in love. Then he earns $1,000 from an academic magazine for his article, which advocates supremacy of the intellect. The school's faculty is so impressed that Cookson's scholarship is reinstated. William, heading the detectives investigating Pierlot's murder, begins to suspect Cookson, particularly after the young man offers to help police and unwittingly aids them by dropping hints about the killer's identity. When William turns the spotlight on Cookson, the student accuses him of persecuting him. Cookson confesses the crime to sweetheart Gwynne, but, before he turns himself in, William tells him that another has admitted killing Pierlot. Cookson prepares to flee with Gwynne but is run over by a car and killed. Just at that moment, Cookson wakes up; the entire story has been a nightmare. Pierlot, the victim in his fearful dream, arrives to advance him money and inform him that he has persuaded the school to continue his scholarship. Reality is proved better than the machinations of the subconscious when, a few minutes later, Cookson meets the girl of his dream, Gwynne, and begins romancing her for real. Though much is drawn for this story from the evil exploits of Richard Loeb who murdered Bobbie Franks in Chicago in 1924 with Nathan Leopold, the twists and turns of this well-written and directed film will keep the viewer fascinated. All the production values are above standard, especially for Poverty Row's Monogram Studios. leave a comment
